I'll be home for Christmas
mixed media triptych with sensationalist newspaper headlines
each panel 83cm x 63cm / 32.5" x 25"
December 2020: the atmosphere in London is electric with talk of yet another lockdown.
Seats upstairs in the Toulouse Lautrec jazz club in Kennington are set out socially distanced. The Gabriel Latchin Trio - Gabriel Latchin on piano, Dario Di Lecce on bass, and Josh Morrison on drums - takes to the stage to launch their smooth nostalgic jazz album: I'll be home for Christmas.
It is a very special night, more so because tier one restrictions had just been imposed, with London entering tier two almost instantly, to be heightened to tier three by the weekend. It is the last evening any Londoner could enjoy before many venues closed until the following May.
I'll be home for Christmas, like the Gabriel Latchin trio, is in three parts: three panels, each representing a member of the group. Each instrument is shown silenced and abandoned, made up of the sensationalist newspaper headlines that served as an alarmist commentary to the time.
The work is dedicated to all musicians, who lost their livelihoods during the 2020 covid pandemic, and to all the audiences, who were bereft of their sound.
